Ensuring Safe Coexistence Between General Aviation and Aeromodelism Activities
In its ongoing effort to enhance aviation safety, the Luxembourg Directorate of Civil Aviation (DAC) has released the updated Air Safety Bulletin ASB 2025/01. This bulletin revises and supersedes ASB 2023/01 and provides essential information for general aviation pilots regarding aeromodelism sites across Luxembourg
What’s New?
A significant update to the bulletin is the authorization of a new aeromodelism site on the Lintgen plateau. This site allows model aircraft operations up to 1,000 feet above ground level (AGL). Its location is critical for VFR pilots flying from Luxembourg Airport (ELLX), as it lies between the inbound MERSA VFR route and the outbound CARLI VFR route.
Background on Aeromodelism Regulations
Model aircraft operations in Luxembourg typically fall under EU drones regulation 2019/947, which imposes a standard height limit of 120 meters (400 feet) AGL. However, aeromodelism clubs can receive special authorizations from DAC for higher flight ceilings, as is the case with the Lintgen plateau site. Currently, there are six authorized sites, including this new addition.
Pilot Recommendations
To mitigate risks and enhance safety, DAC recommends the following actions for pilots:
- Pre-flight Preparation: Familiarize yourself with the locations of aeromodelism fields. The updated information will become available in the AIP (Aeronautical Information Publication).
- Accurate Navigation: Maintain precise navigation and altitude to avoid conflicts with model aircraft.
- Regular Updates: Periodically review the AIP for changes, including Part ENR 5.5, and the ELLX Visual Approach Chart.
Future Developments
Any additional aeromodelism clubs authorized for operations above 120 meters AGL will be incorporated into the AIP and relevant charts. However, pilots should note that external VFR charts (e.g., DFS, Air Million) may not always reflect this information.
Help Improve Aviation Safety
Pilots encountering model aircraft or experiencing safety occurrences are encouraged to file a report via aviationreporting.eu. Sharing such experiences helps identify risks and enhances safety measures for all airspace users.
