With the weather in Luxembourg, you need to go out in search of the sun where it is, i.e. South.
A major change occurred in 2023 for ULM flights in Spain : One of the major regulations imposed to ULMs has been finally lifted! Previously, the flight ceiling was limited to 1,000 ft…yes, just that. Probably thanks to the new reality created by high-end ULMs, the ceiling has now been raised to 10,000 ft, with the possibility of 13,000 ft less than 30 mn.
Unfortunately, two other major constraints do still apply :
- ULMs are prohibited to fly in controlled areas.
- EU citizens must fill out a self-declaration document on the Civil Aviation Authority website prior to the flight(s) and valid 6 months.
The second constraint looks simple but is technically complex. The pilot needs to register on the official website with the electronic certificate called « Clave », a tool comparable to LuxTrust. Obtaining this certificate requires that you, among other things, to go to an office for identity accreditation. These are real obstacles, even more so if you are not fluent in Spanish.
So for now, I’m a bit stuck. If eventually, I’m successful in completing this process, I will share all of the details with you on our AOPA website. In the meantime, any information that you may have in this respect is most welcome. You can send me an email at: etienne.haumont@aopa.lu
