Safety Seminar - highlights

Our AOPA Safety Seminar took place on Sat Feb 3rd and every year it just gets better and better! Almost 50 pilots attended. For the full article on our website click here.

Jean-Claude Petesch from the DAC returned providing us with the Annual Safety Review. He reminded us to keep reporting all occurrences. Reporting will become automated for operators while still being manual for GA pilots via a portal.

Ralf Hubo from the Deutscher Aeroclub talked about flight safety at the club level. He advised of upcoming events at his home airfield of Marpingen EDRC.

Roland Kaps-Becker from AOPA Switzerland was back to talk about the impossible turn on power loss after takeoff. Reminding us that it all depends - on your plane, the weather, your experience, the configuration.....so best to book some time on the simulator to practice.

Wendell Lynch from EASA asked us to focus on the positives, on what we are doing right. We should seek to master our craft, practice during routine flights, honing our skills and to do so mindfully, deliberately. He stressed the importance of really knowing your equipment, so that if something goes wrong, you are not fumbling with it.

Jan Hendricks from the DFS-FIS explained the role of the Flight Information Services, stressing that VFR in IMC is always an emergency and they will do their utmost to assist. He reminded us that there are great youtube videos from the DFS online.

Marc Frank from Luxair introduced us to their TEM machine - Threat and Error Management. He asked us to think about this:

  • Threats come at the crew and require predicting the future
  • Errors come from the crew and require dealing with the pat
  • Undesired aircraft states require managing the present

Rants and Raves - vent or praise!

Do you feel strongly about something aviation related? Do you need to vent about it or praise it? You've come to the right spot!

You can share your rants or raves by emailing us at editor@aopa.lu

Rant: Bathrooms at Findel

By now most airports have understood that bathroom stalls need to be big enough so that you can bring your hand luggage with you. You need multiple hooks for your backpack, purse, laptop, jacket etc. You need good lighting, ventilation and numerous stalls - plus soap dispensers that work. I wonder when LuxAirport will take note?

Rave: Hold Short

There is nothing like hearing tower ask a huge 747 to hold short as your little single engine piston is landing or passing in front of it. Sometimes the 747 pilots even wave!
