Welcome to your AOPA Luxembourg Newsletter. We hope you finally feel spring has sprung!

Thank you for attending our General Assembly and Safety Seminar.

The Safety Seminar was once again a fantastic kickoff to the season for Luxembourg pilots, bringing together experts from Luxembourg and beyond to promote a strong safety culture and to get together with good friends.

Please keep your flying pics and stories coming, so we can share them in the upcoming newsletters!

EBAW restricted for AVGAS fuelled aircraft

Antwerp (EBAW) airport has issued a permanent NOTAM that the airport is PPR restricted only for AVGAS fuelled aircraft:

"ALL FLIGHTS WITH ACFT USING AVGAS100LL NOT ALLOWED EXC PPR (DUE TO
ENVIRONMENTAL RESTRICTIONS). FOR PPR CONTACT INSPECTION: 0496245950 OR INSPECTION(AT)ANTWERPAIRPORT.AERO"

The consequences for pilots with piston GA planes planning to fly to Antwerp must be evaluated. It is an arbitrary measure which is difficult to justify by "environmental restrictions". Please report your experiences with EBAW to editor@aopa.lu , so we can consider measures in cooperation with AOPA Belgium and IAOPA.

New Model Aircraft activity near ELLX VFR routes

DAC has sent out the Air Safety Bulletin 2025/01 indicating that on the top of the 5 aeromodelism clubs already existing, one new authorization has recently been issued for the club located in Lintgen (49 43 21N, 006 10 17E), with a vertical limit of 1.000 ft AGL / GND.

This club is located between inbound MERSA VFR route and outbound CARLI VFR route, on the Lintgen plateau. A summary map is appended to this bulletin.

The elevation of the plateau is around 1300ft MSL so the authorization is up to around 2300ft MSL while traffic on the VFR routes is at 2000ft MSL.

DAC recommends that:

• During Pre-flight Preparation consider and be aware of the existing aeromodelism fields;

• During the flight maintain accurate navigation and altitude in order to avoid mid-air collisions with model aircraft;

• Regularly check the AIP for potential update in Part ENR 5.5 and ELLX Visual Approach Chart

To improve aviation safety, notify air safety occurrences to the DAC
In the event of an encounter with an aircraft model, please send a report via aviationreporting.eu .

AIS-Light test in Langen FIR

Starting March 20, 2025, a new procedure will be introduced at the Langen FIR as part of a temporary trial operation. This is due to the fact that the Flight Information Service (FIS) frequently reaches its capacity limit due to increasing demand and very large FIS sectors. The procedure was published in the AIP VFR with AIC 01/25.

With the new procedure, pilots communicate their constant listening readiness via the FMC circuit. The FIS controller can contact the pilot via broadcast or on a case-by-case basis if necessary and provide them with specific information.
The prerequisites are:

  • Setting the frequency 123.525 MHz (Langen Information)
  • Setting the FMC 3701
  • Maintaining constant listening watch

It is possible to establish a corresponding radio connection with FIS in the usual way at any time if the pilot deems it necessary.

The trial operation extends exclusively to the Langen Information area on the frequency 123.525 MHz. When terminating listening readiness or leaving the airspace, the transponder must be automatically switched back to SSR code 7000.

As a reminder, in the Brussels FIR (except Luxembourg), you may monitor the FIS frequency 126.900 MHz and set the Transponder code 5101, allowing pilots to monitor the frequency without calling in.
