Welcome to your AOPA Luxembourg Newsletter.

Winter is fast approaching and with it our flying days are getting shorter. Opportunties for flying get scarcer, but staying current is a good idea. Grab your favourite airplane on one of the nice clear days but be sure to check the meteo and sunset time. Weather during these days can develop fast. On a rainy day, why not book a session in the flight simulator with an instructor?

Winter Flying
Flying in the Cold Season

Winter may bring different weather challenges and rewards for GA flying. Colder temperatures and more precipitation bring icing, snow and fog. Weather systems such as depressions will bring low cloud, rain and high winds. But winter can also be a time of stable conditions – crisp mornings, clear skies and good visibility.

Get some insights from this report by the British CAA.

Refresher - RTBA / AZBA

We all end up flying in France or through France at some point, afterall, France is our entire southern border!

When was the last time you checked the AZBA charts?

With increased military activity over the last few months, we wanted to be sure to share these useful links with you.

AZBA: Activation des Zones Basse Altitudes (activation of low altitude zones). These charts are updated daily for the next day and show you which zones are active and at what time. The zones are numbered and their names start with the letter R. The information is available in both English and French.

Click here for the AZBA chart

RTBA: Réseau Très Basse Altitude (very low altitude network). If you want to find out more about this - the French DGAC has put together a great leaflet explaining everything!

Find it here in French and here in English.

Airfield Finds EDTD

EDTD Donaueschingen

Looking for a new place to fly to? We'll share our newest discoveries and hopefully you'll share yours with us at editor@aopa.lu so that we can include them in a future issue!

In just over an hour you can get to Donaueschingen - the source of the Danube river! The airport is well equipped with a comfortable hotel and restaurant at its door (not airside). There is a gorgeous golf course and great restaurants within a 5 minute drive - they'll even come and pick you up if you call ahead (Der Öschberghof).

Nearby is also Schwenningen airfield (EDTS) boasting the International Aviation Museum displaying more than 80 airplanes of different eras.
