Highlights from the AOPA Board Meeting of 25.04.2024

  • Charges for new Board members confirmed
  • With new responsibilies fast tracking and streamlining of member support ongoing
  • More benefits for AOPA members soon to be added
  • Preparation of International Air Cadets visit to Luxembourg on 16.-17.07.2024
  • Preparation of IAOPA World CAssembly in Washington DC of :
    - Resolution to create at ICAO/EASA level a new class of light aircraft inspired by the MOSAIC/LSA in US
    - Spreading member benefits availabilty to all AOPA organisations

What is MOSAIC?

In the US the FAA is going ahead with an enhanced certification specification for Light Sports Aircraft (LSA) expanding and enhancing the already available options for safe flying of advanced light and ultralight airplanes.

AOPA endeavors to generalise this approach at ICAO and EASA level to faciltate the creation and operation of the strongly evolving class of ultralight and very light  airplanes.

Under the proposal, the aircraft’s weight limit is based on its stall speed. By permitting higher stall speeds, the proposal would bring within the Light Sport Aircraft regulatory framework aircraft weighing as much as 3,000 pounds. This more than doubles the weight of aircraft under the current definition of Light Sport of 1,320 pounds, allowing larger and stronger aircraft to qualify as Light Sport Airplane.

The proposal would also expand the type of aircraft sport pilots can operate and allows them to use their aircraft for a wider range of operations such as some aerial work. Although sport pilots could operate aircraft designed with up to four seats, they would remain limited to operating with only one passenger.

Wellness - in and out of the cockpit!

As the days get longer and the weather warmer we are most likely flying more - I do hope so!

We all know how important physical fitness is (for a reminder click here) but how about mental fitness? Check out this article to learn more.

If you love acronyms you might enjoy reading about "AM I SAFE" - an acronym for self-assessment before any flight. You may also have heard of the "IM SAFE" checklist, in the pic above.

Either way - whichever acronym you chose, please be sure to check in with yourself before every flight and listen to those around you if they sense you are not in top form.
