The EU has banned halon fire extinguishers in aircraft cabins for environmental reasons.
Non‑commercial aircraft under 1200 kg MTOM don’t need to carry an extinguisher however aircraft over 1200 kg MTOM, even in non‑commercial use, must carry one.
The problem is that Aviation‑approved, halon‑free extinguishers like Halotron 2 are very expensive and hard to find because commercial airlines are buying up supply. More importantly, they pose a serious health risk in small GA cabins.
The more practical alternative for GA is a small aerosol extinguisher designed for cars, kitchens, and boats which uses harmless aerosol agents and is safe for occupants and avionics; for example: eJet Aerosol or Maus XTIN Klein
IAOPA has recommended to EASA that aircraft operators be officially allowed to choose suitable fire extinguishers themselves. It took some time and patience but after much hard work – EASA has adopted this view!
